At the foot of the imposing massif of Monte Rosa lies the ski resort of Macugnaga, in the province of Verbano Cusio Ossola.
There are two ski areas: Belvedere and Monte Moro. From Pecetto, at an altitude of 1390 m, the chairlift of the same name takes you to the slopes of Alpe Burki (1650 m) where a ski lift serves the 4.3 km of the 3 blue slopes. A second chairlift leads to Belvedere, at the base of the homonymous glacier, at 1932 m and to its three red slopes, 5.8 km long. A treadmill in Pecetto, at the start of the chairlift and another at the arrival of the same lift, allow beginners and children to take their first steps on the snow on skis. From Staffa, at an altitude of 1327 meters, there is a cable car that takes skiers to Alpe Bill at 1711 meters.
From there a second cable car reaches the ski area of Monte Moro where skiers can find 7 slopes of different difficulty; a chairlift, 2 ski lifts and 1 carpet lift go up to 2900 m. There are two beautiful red slopes for alpine skiing (the Moro slope of 6.5 km and the Meccia slope of 4 km) that zigzag from the Moro Pass to Alpe Bill. There are excellent opportunities for snowboarding both on and off the slopes, along the slopes of Monte Moro, up to Alpe Bill, or in the larch woods in the area of Belvedere, just below the face of Monte Rosa. For free-styler there is a reserved area on Monte Moro.
For lovers of cross-country skiing Macugnaga offers cross-country trails that wind through the villages of Pecetto and Isella, from where continuing you can reach the nearby Val Quarazza. The alpine guides (+39 393 8169380 www.guidealpinemacugnaga.it) lead during the winter ski mountaineering enthusiasts to discover the alpine landscapes of the Anzasca Valley and the district of the eastern side of Monte Rosa or accompany freeriders in the descents from the destinations reachable by heliski, or even organize courses for ice climbing.
